A shocking case of child abuse has emerged in North Carolina, involving a 10-month-old child allegedly abused by their parents. Martavious Levar Smith, 29, and Shalisa Monai Lowe, 31, were taken into custody and charged with felony intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. The infant was discovered with bite marks and burns from a cigarette lighter, prompting swift action from authorities.

The alarming events unfolded when patrol deputies responded to a welfare check at the family's home on Powder Horn Road in Iredell County. Concerned family members had reported unexplained bruises and markings on the child's body, leading to a distressing discovery. Upon examination, medical personnel confirmed that the injuries were consistent with physical abuse and required immediate treatment.

Following a transfer to Brenner's Children's Hospital for further evaluation, medical experts determined that the child's injuries were the result of intentional physical abuse, including cigarette lighter burns and bite marks. Subsequently, Smith and Lowe were charged based on collected evidence and statements obtained during the investigation.

Both parents were arrested on July 27 and are currently detained at the Iredell County Detention Center. Smith's bond was set at $100,000 secured, while Lowe's bond amounts to $80,000 secured. The Iredell County Sheriff's Office, along with the Department of Social Services, continues to investigate the case to ensure justice is served.

In an interview with a local news WSOC, a family member recounted their decision to involve authorities after encountering resistance from the parents regarding the child's injuries. Despite the traumatic ordeal, reports indicate that the infant has been released from the hospital and is recuperating.
