In a tragic turn of events in Des Moines, Iowa, a 24-year-old man named Hamza Smajlovic is behind bars for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend's parents as they were helping her move out following the end of their relationship. The incident, which occurred at around 5:20 p.m. on a Friday in the 200 block of NW 51st Place, resulted in the death of 45-year-old Ruth Sue Ann Robison and the critical injury of her 52-year-old husband.
Smajlovic faces serious charges including murder in the first degree, attempted murder, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. According to a criminal complaint, he shot Robison once in the head with a 9 mm pistol and also shot her husband in the head. The shooting took place inside the residence, with Smajlovic allegedly firing into the home while the victims were present. Despite the tragic outcome, the suspect reportedly remained at the scene following the incident.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, apprehending Smajlovic and transporting him to the Polk County Jail where he is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 12 as the investigation into this devastating incident continues. The 24-year-old woman, Smajlovic's ex-girlfriend, was inside the home during the shooting but fortunately was unharmed physically, according to authorities.
