A heated confrontation at Deltona Middle School in Volusia County, Florida, led to the arrest of Jorge Rivera, 46, and Dagmarie Aponte Iturrino, 45, after they allegedly attacked a school resource deputy who had filed battery charges against their son. The charges stemmed from an incident the previous day where their son reportedly shoved a female student.
Incident Details
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the couple arrived at Deltona Middle School on the morning of Nov. 19 to confront the deputy about their son’s battery charge.
When the meeting didn’t go as Rivera hoped, he became irate, verbally attacking the deputy. The confrontation escalated in the hallway, where Dagmarie Aponte Iturrino allegedly pushed the deputy against a wall. Rivera then punched the officer in the head, knocked her to the ground, and stole her Taser.
Bodycam footage shows the deputy regaining control, drawing her firearm, and commanding Rivera to drop the weapon before arresting him. During the altercation, Rivera also reportedly put the school principal in a headlock, which resulted in an additional charge of battery on a school official.
Hate Crime Enhancement
Authorities have added a hate crime enhancement to some of Rivera’s charges due to a derogatory slur he used against the deputy during the altercation.
Bodycam Footage
Released bodycam footage shows the tense exchange in the school office that preceded the physical altercation. Rivera can be seen aggressively pointing at the deputy and accusing her of "failing kids." When the deputy asks the couple to leave, the situation quickly escalates.

The deputy was treated for concussion symptoms at a local hospital and later released. Both parents remain in custody as they await court proceedings.
Both parents face multiple charges, including:
Battery on a law enforcement officer
Resisting arrest with violence
