An argument between a Florida photographer and her client devolved into violence when the upset client, Savon Chantay Tyler, shot 34-year-old Lauren Ashley Martin to death during a fistfight captured on Facebook Live. The tragic incident occurred in Sanford, just north of Orlando, where authorities responded to a shooting in the 1700 block of Travertine Terrace on Tuesday at around 7 p.m.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement found Martin in the road with gunshot wounds to the chest. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, but unfortunately, attempts to save her life were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead. The investigation revealed a pool of blood, a children’s toy bat, and a 9 mm handgun at the scene. Tyler, who resided in the condo complex, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Post-Miranda, she admitted to shooting Martin twice during the physical altercation.
Martin, described as a photographer by her family, had a disagreement with Tyler over some photos that escalated when someone made a comment online, leading to a situation that spiraled out of control. According to family members, Tyler had an issue with the photos, and the situation escalated further after a comment was made online.
Tyler informed police that she was made aware of Martin coming over for a confrontation while watching a Facebook Live video. She then armed herself with a gun and a mini bat, strategically placing the gun in a nearby utility box before meeting Martin in the street. The encounter turned physical, with both engaging in a fistfight before Tyler retrieved the gun and shot Martin twice.
Tyler initially claimed self-defense, stating she feared for her life when Martin took the bat from her. However, she later mentioned concerns for her four children in the home and suggested that she thought Martin might have had a weapon. Despite the darkness obscuring the actual shooting in the Facebook Live videos captured by Martin and Tyler's girlfriend Lakevia Pringle audio recorded two gunshots in the background. The shots struck Martin's forearm and abdomen, causing fatal injuries to several organs.
Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith expressed condolences to Martin's family and friends, emphasizing that violence should never be the answer to disputes. Tyler is currently held at the Seminole County Jail without bond on a first-degree murder charge, with a court date scheduled for December 10. This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences that arise when conflicts are resolved with violence. Let us heed Chief Smith's words and remember that there are always better choices than resorting to violence.
