A Missouri mother, Alyssa Nicole Bowman, 29, will spend the next nine years behind bars after pleading guilty to two counts of child abuse and neglect in Greene County. The harrowing case unfolded when a relative brought a severely malnourished and injured 2-year-old boy to Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
The child had bruises, cuts, abrasions all over his body, and appeared to be malnourished to the point that an officer likened his condition to concentration camp victims. He weighed only 20 pounds and was diagnosed with acute kidney injury, developmental delays, nonverbal disorder, and failure to thrive; described as a "victim of torture."
Upon visiting the Bowman residence, authorities found unsanitary conditions with a foul odor, remnants of food, and feces in the child's sleeping area. The boy's sister revealed in a forensic interview that the parents withheld food and water, ignored her health concerns, and were generally mean to both children.
Prosecutors dropped additional charges in exchange for Bowman's guilty plea. Her husband, Joshua Bowman, was also arrested in connection with the case. The defendant is eligible for parole after serving five years of her sentence, underscoring the severity of her actions and the long-lasting impact on the innocent victims.
