Mother Charged with First-Degree Attempted Murder After Shooting 13-Year-Old Daughter in Seat Pleasant

Updated: Sep 26

A tragic incident unfolded in Seat Pleasant when a mother, identified as 32-year-old Talecka Brown, allegedly shot her 13-year-old daughter inside their home on Monday evening. The young girl sustained a gunshot wound to her neck and was found in critical condition near the front door of their residence on the 500 block of 69th Place. With swift action, officers responded to the scene just before 5 p.m. and rushed the victim to the hospital, where she remains in a critical state, requiring a chest tube to assist with her recovery.

Following the shooting, officers from the Prince George's County Gun Crimes Unit initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Surveillance footage obtained by authorities depicted the moments leading up to and following the shooting, providing crucial evidence for the case.

According to court documents, the teenager had returned home and engaged in a physical altercation with her mother, Brown, shortly before the shooting took place. The girl recounted that during the argument, she noticed her mother holding a gun. As she attempted to move away from the escalating confrontation and head towards the stairs, a single gunshot rang out. Subsequently, the teen remembered falling down the stairs, rendering her unable to move.

In a disturbing twist, Brown allegedly instructed her daughter to fabricate a story claiming that an intruder had entered the home and shot her. However, thorough examination of surveillance footage from the neighborhood revealed no evidence of any individuals entering or exiting the residence at the time of the incident.

Police recovered a gun and shell casing from the scene, further corroborating the events described by the victim. During interviews with law enforcement, Brown confessed that she and her daughter were the sole individuals present in the house during the shooting. As a result, Brown was arrested and is currently detained at the Department of Corrections pending legal proceedings.

Expressing his dismay over the tragic turn of events, Acting Seat Pleasant Police Chief Cedric Heyward commended the officers for their prompt response and resolute actions at the scene. He emphasized the distressing nature of the situation, particularly when a caregiver is implicated in such acts of violence within the community. Heyward vowed to collaborate with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Prince George’s County Police to ensure accountability for Brown's actions and seek justice for the victim.

The aftermath of this harrowing incident highlights the stark reality of domestic disputes turning perilous and underscores the profound impact of family violence on individuals and communities. As the victim fights for her recovery, the lingering emotional trauma serves as a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance and intervention in cases of escalating domestic conflicts.
