Miguel Badillo, 24, and Kiara Davis, 27, were charged with second-degree murder and second-degree child cruelty in the tragic death of their 8-month-old daughter Ellie in Georgia. The infant suffocated after getting wedged between a couch cushion and mattress in a home filled with animal feces and insects.
The incident unfolded on September 27, 2024, when authorities responded to a distressing scene on Rosemont Drive. A subsequent search of the residence revealed the dire living conditions that Ellie was subjected to. Detectives found her placed on an angled mattress on a love seat without safety precautions to prevent her from rolling off and becoming trapped between the mattress and couch cushions.
The deplorable state of the home was detailed during a court hearing covered by Columbus ABC affiliate WTVM. An officer testified about the appalling conditions, including unconfined animals, insect infestation, and decaying food in every room. Despite this, Davis had allegedly left the infant unattended while she went outside to socialize with a friend. Badillo, who was also charged, was not present when the tragedy occurred but was held responsible for being aware of the hazardous conditions that led to Ellie's death.
During the court proceedings, investigators shed light on the circumstances leading to Ellie's demise. It was revealed that the baby rolled off a mattress in a bedroom and became trapped, ultimately dying from asphyxiation. Although the couple's landlord described them as caring parents, the prosecution maintains that the unsafe environment and negligent actions by the parents contributed to the fatal outcome.
With the case now bound over to Muscogee County Superior Court, Davis and Badillo are detained at the Muscogee County Jail without bond. As the legal process unfolds, follow-up investigations are expected to provide further insights into this heart-wrenching tragedy.
