A mother and father, Ciera Hurd and Daryl Lentz, are speaking exclusively to CBS News Miami after being charged with child neglect for leaving their four children, including a 2-year-old girl, alone in their third-floor apartment on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. In a heartfelt interview, Hurd expressed deep regret, emphasizing that they are not bad parents but made a grave mistake. Lentz admitted their error and offered advice to other parents, urging them to stay close to their kids at all times.
The incident occurred when the couple went "clubbing" to places like Club Madonna, leaving the children unattended for 4 1/2 hours. The 2-year-old girl managed to exit the apartment, traverse three flights of stairs, and was found crying by a Good Samaritan around midnight, who promptly called the police. The children left alone included a 12-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl, and a 5-year-old boy.
The parents, who had traveled from Baltimore to celebrate their son's fifth birthday and the father's 40th birthday, were released on their own recognizance after appearing in court and facing charges of child neglect with no great bodily harm. Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer sternly advised them not to leave their kids alone, emphasizing the potential risks and urging constant supervision.
Hurd revealed a previous conviction for child neglect in Baltimore in 2018, stemming from an incident where one of her children ran out of their home naked. The couple expressed their intention to reunite with their children and their struggle with the involvement of the Florida Department of Children & Families, with a hearing scheduled for October 1. Facing financial difficulties and emotional distress, they vow to rectify the situation and underscore that they have never been away from their children for even a day.
