A violent family dispute in Minnesota led to the deadly shooting of a man by his son, who allegedly broke into a hunting cabin and executed his father in front of two horrified witnesses. The incident occurred on Friday evening in Hinckley, a town located about 80 miles north of Minneapolis. According to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, authorities responded around 8:45 p.m. to a report of a shooting at a cabin. The 911 caller informed dispatchers that 31-year-old Kirk Edward Hazlett III had shot his 62-year-old father, Kirk Edward Hazlett II, in the head.
Upon arrival, deputies found the victim’s body near a couch, face down, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A probable cause affidavit revealed that Hazlett III allegedly entered the cabin while the two other men were finishing dinner. One of the surviving men received an alert on his phone about movement detected by a camera on the property. Upon checking, he saw Hazlett III approaching with a pistol. Before he could retrieve his own firearm, Hazlett III entered the cabin and immediately fired three shots.
The surviving men tried to plead with Hazlett III, who ordered them to sit on the couch. As one man described, the father was still alive and breathing, but Hazlett III approached him and shot him in the head, "execution style," to ensure his death. Afterward, he confiscated the men’s phones and allowed them to leave the cabin.
Witnesses told deputies that the father and son had been estranged for a long time. Though the specifics of their conflict are unclear, it is known that they had a history of disagreements, including a prior altercation after a drinking incident, which led to the father having his son trespassed from the property. Despite the familial tension, witnesses noted that Hazlett III remained calm and coherent throughout the attack.
The suspect was later located at his home in Cambridge, where officers found his vehicle, a 2014 black Ford Fusion, which he had used to travel to the cabin. Hazlett III has been charged with second-degree murder, burglary, and kidnapping and is being held on a $3 million bond at the Pine County Jail.
