A 20-year-old Texas woman and her boyfriend are facing capital murder charges after allegedly drugging, stabbing, and killing a man who had let them live in his condominium. Haley Barber and Leo Moore are accused of murdering 53-year-old Johnny Mac Ross Jr. in his Garland home during a robbery.
The couple was arrested on Thursday and charged with capital murder by terror, threat, or other felony, as well as evading arrest. Moore faces an additional charge of property theft over $2,500.
Crime Unfolds
According to the Garland Police Department, officers responded to a call around 1 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2024, reporting a deceased individual in the 4500 block of Chaha Road, approximately 17 miles east of Dallas. Police found Ross dead in his residence with multiple stab wounds, and evidence at the scene suggested foul play.
Investigators discovered that one of Ross’ vehicles, a 2001 Mercedes, was missing. Later that day, officers spotted the stolen car and attempted to stop it. The suspects fled, leading police on a brief car and foot chase before being apprehended.
Details Emerge
A probable cause affidavit revealed chilling details of the crime. Barber allegedly sold Ross’ Mercedes to a friend, claiming it belonged to her “grandfather.” The friend accompanied Barber to Ross’ condo to retrieve a spare key and noticed a foul smell in the home. When questioned about her “grandfather,” Barber allegedly showed the friend Ross’ body, wrapped in garbage bags, sheets, and a rug, in a back bedroom.
The friend contacted his mother and the authorities. Inside the condo, police discovered bloodstains on furniture, bloody towels and shoes hidden in a closet, and a Bowie knife. Doorbell camera footage reportedly showed Barber and Moore entering and leaving the condo multiple times around the time of the murder, which authorities believe occurred days before Ross’ body was discovered.
Suspects’ Admissions
During police interviews, Barber and Moore allegedly confessed to planning the robbery. Moore admitted to stabbing Ross in the neck while he slept on the couch. The couple left the scene for several hours, returning to find Ross still alive. Barber reportedly told Moore to “finish off” Ross to end his suffering, and Moore admitted to stabbing him multiple times in the upper back.
The suspects are being held in the Dallas County Jail, each on a $1 million bond.
