A Texas woman is facing charges after allegedly leaving her 16-month-old child alone to travel to San Antonio to meet a man she met on a dating app, according to authorities. Reese Louise Myers, 25, has been charged with one count of abandoning or endangering a child, the Killeen Police Department confirmed.
The incident occurred in July 2024 but culminated in Myers' recent arrest in Southern California. She was taken into custody near Barstow, California, earlier this month on a fugitive warrant and returned to Texas this week.
Incident Details
On July 28, Killeen police were called to an apartment on West Hallmark Avenue to check on the welfare of a child. Reports indicated a toddler was hanging near a damaged window while an aggressive dog attempted to attack.
When officers arrived, they found the child protruding from a window patched with plexiglass and cardboard. Inside the apartment, the toddler was wearing only a T-shirt, with visible diaper rash and feces on their skin. A search revealed the child was alone except for two dogs.
Police contacted Myers, who admitted she was in San Antonio—160 miles away—visiting a man she met on the dating app Hinge. According to the arrest affidavit, Myers claimed she had left her child in the care of a babysitter she found on Facebook.
However, when police contacted the alleged babysitter, she denied recent involvement, stating she last cared for Myers' child in December 2023. Officers reviewed the babysitter's Facebook messages, which showed no communication with Myers after that time.
Abandonment and Arrest
The apartment layout suggested Myers prepared for the child to be left alone. Doors were closed, a baby gate blocked the kitchen, and the home’s windows were locked—except for the makeshift-patched one where the child was seen.
Police instructed Myers to return to Killeen immediately, but she failed to comply. On Nov. 5, she was arrested by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office on the Fort Irwin Army Base, located roughly 1,365 miles from Killeen.
Myers was released in California on Nov. 12 and arrested by Killeen police upon her return to Texas. The child was taken to a hospital for evaluation and placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
