In a disturbing turn of events in Gaston, North Carolina, a 35-year-old man named Ryvaries Butcher has been arrested and charged with the alleged first-degree murders of his aunt and uncle, Michael and Carolyn Powell. The tragic incident, which occurred outside the Powells' home, saw the couple fatally shot at close range with a shotgun. The victims, 72-year-old Michael and 70-year-old Carolyn, were discovered lying in the driveway by first responders, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Authorities swiftly identified Butcher as the suspected shooter, revealing that he fled the scene in the victims' truck following the double homicide. Just hours later, the stolen vehicle was located in a hotel parking lot 250 miles away in Roanoke Rapids, leading to Butcher's apprehension by a collaborative effort involving the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, and Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Drawing attention to a potential connection, it was disclosed that Butcher was not only a close neighbor but also a relative of the victims, adding a more disturbing layer to the crime. While a motive for the brutal killings remains unclear, the Northampton County Sheriff's Office expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the esteemed couple, emphasizing their positive impact on the community.

Reverend Travis Judkins of Cool Spring Missionary Baptist Church reflected on the Powells as integral members of their congregation, noting Michael's involvement in the church choir. Additionally, he disclosed Butcher's long-standing struggles with mental health challenges, suggesting that intervention could have possibly averted the devastating outcome.

Butcher now remains incarcerated in the Northampton County Jail without bond on the murder charges, awaiting a court appearance scheduled for November 19.
