Checkers Employee Accused of Fatally Shooting Customer Over Mayonnaise Dispute in Florida

Elijah Mackey,
A 23-year-old Checkers employee in Kissimmee, Florida, is accused of first-degree murder after a deadly altercation with a customer over missing mayonnaise packets.

KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA- A deadly altercation at a Checkers fast food restaurant has left a Florida community in shock after a dispute over mayonnaise escalated into a fatal shooting. Authorities have arrested 23-year-old Elijah Mackey, an employee at the establishment, who now faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of 40-year-old Wesley Robertson.

The shooting unfolded just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday at the Checkers location at 5780 W. U.S. 192 in Kissimmee. According to the Osceola County Sheriffโ€™s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting and found Robertson critically injured. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses at the scene provided chilling accounts of the moments leading up to the violence. According to a probable cause affidavit, Robertson had been engaged in a heated exchange with a female employee at the drive-thru window after allegedly receiving an incomplete order. His frustration stemmed specifically from missing mayonnaise packets. He repeatedly asked to speak with a manager, escalating tensions.

It was during this time that Mackey, another employee, exited the restaurant through the drive-thru window and confronted Robertson outside. Witnesses reported that during their verbal dispute, Robertson insulted Mackey, allegedly calling him a โ€œpโ€”yโ€ or a โ€œbโ€”.โ€ The affidavit states that Mackey responded with, โ€œOh, I am a pโ€”y?โ€ before pulling a firearm and shooting Robertson in the chest.

Mackey initially fled the scene but reportedly returned moments later to retrieve a backpack before running off again. Law enforcement later located him hiding beneath a stairwell at a nearby hotel. Upon arrest, Mackey allegedly admitted to having a gun and asked deputies, โ€œIs dude OK?โ€ Surveillance footage from the restaurant corroborated witness accounts and showed Mackey exiting through the window before approaching and shooting Robertson.

Authorities have confirmed that Mackey is being held without bond at the Osceola County Jail. He has been appointed a public defender, and his legal proceedings are pending.

Checkers Corporate responded to the incident in a public statement:

โ€œWe are shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred last night at our restaurant in Kissimmee, Florida. The actions of this one employee do not reflect the values of the thousands of our hardworking employees across the country. We are working closely with the police in their investigation, and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guestโ€™s family.โ€

As the investigation continues, the tragic loss of Wesley Robertson over something as minor as a condiment packet has ignited conversations about customer service tensions, workplace violence, and the responsibilities of employers in ensuring public safety.
