Detroit Priest Arrested After Alleged Inappropriate Incident with Teen Girl at Joliet Church
A priest from Detroit was arrested on Monday following allegations of inappropriate behavior during a visit to a Joliet church in November 2024. The incident reportedly occurred on November 21 at Queen of Apostles Church on Woodlawn Avenue.
According to the Joliet Police Department, authorities were called to the church at 3:23 p.m. that day in response to a complaint about a teenage girl. Upon arrival, officers were told that Carlos Martins, a 50-year-old priest visiting Joliet on a St. Jude relic tour, approached the girl while she was standing in line to view the relic.
Witnesses reported that Martins asked about her hair before grabbing it and making a flossing motion with her hair in his mouth. The girl then sat down, and it is said that Martins sat behind her, where he allegedly made a growling noise.
After a thorough investigation, Joliet detectives submitted their findings to the Will County State's Attorney's Office, which subsequently approved a misdemeanor battery charge against Martins.
Martins was arrested Monday morning at 9:41 a.m., after a warrant for battery was quashed in court. He was processed and released with a Notice to Appear in court at a later date.
