Authorities in New York have arrested five individuals in connection with the horrifying torture and murder of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota. Nordquist's remains were discovered in a field in Benton, and investigators describe the case as one of the most disturbing crimes they have ever encountered.
The suspects—Precious N. Arzuaga, 38; Kyle R. Sage, 33; Jennifer A. Quijano, 30; Patrick A. Goodwin, 30; and Emily Jean Motyka, 19—have been charged with second-degree murder. Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges, including potential hate crime enhancements.
Months of Abuse and a Grisly Discovery
Authorities revealed that Nordquist traveled to New York from Minnesota in September and had been staying at Patty's Lodge motel in Canandaigua. Between December and February, he allegedly suffered ongoing physical and psychological abuse at the hands of multiple individuals.
"No human being should have to endure what Sam endured," said Major Kevin Sucher of the New York State Police.
According to a felony complaint obtained by local news outlet WHAM, Nordquist was subjected to severe physical and sexual abuse. Reports state that the suspects assaulted him using a table leg and broomsticks, as well as beat him with sticks, dog toys, ropes, and belts. Tragically, the prolonged torture resulted in his death.
After his murder, the suspects allegedly dumped Nordquist's body in a field in Benton, where authorities discovered his remains on Thursday.
Authorities and Family React
New York State Police Captain Kelly Swift described the case as "one of the most horrific crimes" in his 20-year career. Ontario County District Attorney Jim Ritts echoed the sentiment, calling it "the worst homicide investigation" his office has ever handled.
"The facts and circumstances of this crime are beyond depraved," Ritts stated.
Nordquist's sister shared her heartbreak with local ABC affiliate KSTP, revealing that he had traveled to New York to meet Arzuaga, someone she had distrusted from the beginning.
"I, off the bat, did not like Precious," she said. "I did not trust Precious, and I begged Sam not to meet her, but he felt he was in love."
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the crime and whether hate crime charges may be applicable. As the case unfolds, law enforcement urges anyone with information to come forward.
