Henrico County Woman Charged with Malicious Wounding and Child Abuse in Hospital NICU
Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, a woman from Henrico County, Virginia, has been charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse in connection to the abuse of several newborns at the local hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The ongoing investigation by Henrico County police continues to unravel details regarding the abuse, which involved at least seven newborns.
Hospital Investigation and Newborn Injuries
Henrico County police are reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage from the hospital’s NICU in an attempt to identify more victims of the alleged abuse. Police spokesperson Taylor stated, "The investigation is ongoing, and there could be more babies identified."
The incident has been particularly distressing for the families involved, including one couple who experienced multiple miscarriages before choosing to deliver their babies at the hospital, believing it had the necessary resources to protect their children.
One of the babies, Noah, had previously shown signs of health struggles, such as low amniotic fluid before birth. His family was hopeful for his survival, but soon after Hackey, Noah’s father, left the hospital, he received a call about Noah’s condition. The hospital had suggested that Noah’s left tibia was fractured, allegedly due to an injection given by a nurse.
Hackey’s mother, who is a nursing director, reviewed the case and determined the fracture was highly unlikely from the injection. After consulting Child Protection Services (CPS), an investigation was launched. The hospital later closed the case, claiming the fracture was likely the result of the injection.
CPS and Henrico County Police Involvement
In January 2024, Henrico County police informed the family that the investigation into Noah’s injury had been closed. However, months later in September 2024, CPS reached out with an update revealing that their investigation found "a preponderance of the evidence that child abuse/neglect occurred."
When Hackey read a news article revealing multiple injured infants in the NICU, he was shocked to learn that Noah was not the only victim. He said, “To say that we’re blessed that our son only sustained one fracture is a crazy sentence,” adding that another victim was a twin like Noah.
Response to Claims and Investigations
In a statement released on Tuesday, Henrico County police disputed social media rumors suggesting all the injured infants were Black. They stated, “The preliminary investigation indicates this information is not factual.” Hackey agrees with this clarification, noting that the babies were of various races, and while there were twins involved, there was no apparent pattern in the injuries beyond the fact that all victims were boys.
