Investigation Underway in Morehouse Parish Officer-Involved Shooting
Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Morehouse Parish that left a 22-year-old man dead. The Northeast Louisiana Sheriffโs Investigative Unit (NELA SIU) is leading the inquiry.
Details of the Incident
The shooting occurred on Nov. 23 around 8:50 p.m. when a Morehouse Parish deputy conducted a traffic stop on Carbon Plant Road. According to NELA SIU, a male passenger armed with a handgun exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The deputy reportedly shot the suspect during the pursuit.
The man, later identified as Marquez Crowder, was transported to Morehouse General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. However, a witness, Tiffani Davis, who was driving the vehicle, claims Crowder died at the scene.
Witness Account
Davis recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating she and Crowder were heading to a store after celebrating her childโs birthday. She alleged the officers gave no reason for the traffic stop and described the scene as chaotic.
โMarquez got out behind me and ran in front of my car. Officer Cody jumped out with his gun already drawn,โ Davis said. โMarquez never turned around or pointed a gun at the officer. He was shot more than 10 times while on the ground. A nurse who was with us tried to help, but officers wouldnโt allow her to assist.โ
Community Concern and Official Statement
The shooting has raised questions about the use of force and the circumstances surrounding the incident. NELA SIU addressed public concern in a press release, stating, โWe understand that incidents of this nature are concerning to the public, and we are committed to transparency as the investigation progresses. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.โ
Next Steps
NELA SIU has assembled a team of investigators from surrounding agencies to ensure a thorough and impartial review. The investigation will examine body camera footage, officer reports, and witness statements to determine the events leading up to Crowderโs death.
This incident has sparked local calls for accountability and clarity as the community awaits further updates.
