Roseville, Michigan – Police Discover “Lookalike” Items During Search for Missing Mom Ashley Elkins
After a seven-day search of the Pine Tree Acres landfill in Lenox Township, Michigan, police have found "lookalike" items that may belong to missing mother Ashley Elkins, 30. The items will now undergo laboratory testing to determine if they are connected to the case, according to the Roseville Police Department.
Elkins, a devoted mom of two young boys, was last seen leaving her home on January 2, 2025. Her sudden disappearance has left her family devastated and the community desperate for answers.
Who Was Ashley Elkins?
Ashley Elkins, a 30-year-old mother to two sons aged 7 and 10, was known for being incredibly close with her family. Her uncle, Maurice Morton, described her as someone who was "always in contact" with loved ones, making her disappearance deeply unsettling.
“She’s a dedicated mother and family-oriented person “This is so out of character for her.”
Elkins was reported missing by her family the day after she was last seen. Since then, law enforcement and volunteers have worked tirelessly to uncover any clues about her whereabouts.
A Difficult Search at the Landfill
The search for Ashley centered on the nearly 700-acre Pine Tree Acres landfill in Lenox Township. The Roseville Police Department, along with multiple agencies, combed through the cold and treacherous conditions using drones, shovels, rakes, bulldozers, excavators, and cadaver dogs.
Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin shared that the search covered a "very large area" over the week. Despite their exhaustive efforts, only "lookalike" items were recovered. These items will now be turned over to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office for further examination.
“We worked through the weekend attempting to bring closure for the family,” Chief Berlin said in a statement.
The Family’s Reaction
Ashley’s family, while grateful for the tireless efforts of law enforcement and volunteers, expressed their disappointment with the lack of concrete results.
“We are disappointed, but we want to thank everyone who helped,” Morton told the Macomb Daily. “Right now, we’re requesting privacy as we await a charging decision by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.”
The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to “support the future dreams of Ashley Elkins’ two young sons.” The campaign has already raised over $10,000, a testament to the love and support Ashley’s family has received during this incredibly difficult time.
The Investigation and Suspicion
The investigation took a troubling turn earlier this month when Ashley’s ex-boyfriend, 32-year-old Deandre Booker, was arrested and charged with lying to police.
Prosecutors allege that Booker provided false information to detectives and conducted suspicious Google searches, including “is blood traceable” and “how to beat a polygraph.” Maurice Morton has said that police informed the family they believe Booker is responsible for Ashley’s death, which they allege occurred at his home.
“We met with Roseville and Warren police departments, and they told us that based on the evidence, Ashley had been murdered by her ex-boyfriend,” Morton told WXYZ.
What’s Next in the Case?
Booker remains in custody with bond set at $250,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, where the case may take additional steps forward.
While the investigation continues, Ashley’s family remains in limbo, grappling with both grief and uncertainty. The discovery of the “lookalike” items has given them a small glimmer of hope for answers, but they continue to wait for definitive evidence.
A Community Rallies for Ashley’s Sons
The focus for Ashley’s family has now shifted to ensuring her two sons have a secure future. The outpouring of support from the community through donations and prayers has brought some solace during this tragic time.
Ashley’s mother, Brittany, shared on the GoFundMe page:
“My daughter Ashley was full of life, and her smile lit up any room. She adored her boys and wanted the best for them. Anything you can donate will help us make sure her children have the support they need to move forward.”
