A Texas doctor faces serious accusations of drug use during surgery, along with a history of criminal behavior, yet he may still regain his medical license.
Dr. Nathan Starke, 39, was a urologist at Houston Methodist Hospital when concerns arose about his alleged impairment during surgical procedures in August and September of 2024. According to the Texas Medical Board, Starke participated in multiple surgeries while appearing under the influence. His medical license was suspended on September 6, and a subsequent drug test in October confirmed he had tested positive for cocaine.
The allegations against Starke extend beyond his medical practice. In March 2023, he was charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend. Court documents allege that he pushed her with both hands, causing her to fall and sustain injuries, including a chipped tooth and bruising. Starke also has two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated, in 2007 and 2017.
Records obtained by KRIV, a Houston-based Fox affiliate, detailed the Texas Medical Boardโs findings. In one instance, Starke was reportedly impaired during a prostate biopsy in August. During a September surgery, he allegedly arrived just in time for the final three minutes of a procedure for which he was the attending physician.
Houston Methodist confirmed that Starke is no longer employed at the hospital, but his medical license remains a contentious issue. Although currently suspended, the Texas Medical Board has left the door open for reinstatement if Starke demonstrates rehabilitation. For now, the board emphasized that allowing him to resume practicing medicine poses "a continuing threat to public welfare."
