Wisconsin School Shooting: Teen Opens Fire, Killing Two Before Taking Her Own Life
Authorities in Madison, Wisconsin, are investigating a tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, where a teenage girl opened fire, killing a teacher and a student while injuring several others before taking her own life.
The shooter, identified as 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, also known as “Samantha,” entered the school Monday morning along with other students. The attack occurred in a study hall classroom, where Rupnow indiscriminately fired a handgun. Police confirmed that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Details of the Incident
The Madison Police Department reported that the shooting began shortly before 11 a.m. A second-grade teacher called 911, and law enforcement arrived within minutes. Police medics, already undergoing trauma-response training nearby, rushed to the scene and provided immediate aid.
Six individuals were transported to area hospitals with gunshot injuries. The names of the victims have not been released. Authorities emphasized that no specific targets were identified; everyone in the room was at equal risk.
Community in Shock
The school, which serves 420 students from kindergarten through grade 12, had been preparing for festive events leading up to Christmas break. Instead, Abundant Life has closed early, offering counseling and support for students, families, and staff.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed her devastation: “This is a day we hoped would never come in Madison.”
Shooter Investigation Underway
Investigators are working to determine Rupnow’s motive and the origins of the handgun used in the attack. Local and federal agencies, including the ATF, are conducting firearm tracing to determine ownership. Police are also reviewing possible online posts and a reported manifesto.
Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge of the shooter’s actions or mindset leading up to the attack to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers.
National Response
President Joe Biden condemned the violence and called for immediate action on gun reform, including universal background checks and a ban on high-capacity magazines. “Every child deserves to feel safe in their classroom,” Biden said.
This incident marks the 83rd school shooting of 2024, a grim milestone surpassing previous years.
