Denver CPA Arrested After Allegedly Shooting Two Strangers in Park Over Conspiracy Fears

A certified public accountant in Denver is facing serious charges after allegedly opening fire on two strangers in a public park—reportedly believing they were involved in a psychological warfare operation against him.

Ryan Egelston, 28, was arrested on Sunday for attempted first-degree murder after allegedly targeting two individuals at Washington Park. According to police, the incident began when one of the victims simply asked to sit on the same bench as Egelston. This seemingly harmless request escalated into a heated altercation, with witnesses stating that Egelston spat on the victim, shoved him, and delivered a punch to his lower back.

As the victim attempted to leave on his bicycle, Egelston allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired a shot, striking the rear tire. Moments later, he approached a second person near South Downing Street and East Kentucky Avenue—this time firing a bullet that struck the victim in the neck and jaw, causing serious injuries. Witnesses reported that the second victim had no prior interaction with Egelston before the attack.

Following the shooting, Egelston fled the scene in a red Hyundai sedan but was apprehended after a high-risk police maneuver forced his vehicle to stop.

During police questioning, Egelston claimed he believed the victims were part of a "psy-ops" operation—a term referring to psychological warfare. Investigators also uncovered that he had previously spoken on a Christian podcast about his belief that artificial intelligence would bring about the end times, warning that AI could be used as a tool for psychological manipulation.

Authorities revealed that Egelston had been placed on a mental health hold in May 2024, though details about the incident remain unclear.
