Detroit Man Charged with Gun Crime After Triple Homicide Victims Found in Burning Vehicle

Parolee Edward Redding faces federal gun charges as authorities investigate a triple homicide linked to a burning car found in Detroit.

Detroit, MI — A man recently paroled from prison is facing federal gun charges after police linked him to a disturbing crime scene in which three people were found dead inside a burning vehicle early Sunday morning on Detroit’s west side.

According to a federal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Edward Redding, 32, has been charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. While he has not yet been formally charged with the killings, he is under investigation in connection with the triple homicide.

At approximately 5:54 a.m. on Sunday, April 6, Detroit Fire Department crews responded to a vehicle engulfed in flames near the intersection of 30th Street and Milford Street. After extinguishing the fire, responders discovered three bodies inside the car. The victims have not yet been publicly identified.

Investigators were able to identify a silver 2009 Saturn Vue, registered to Redding, that had reportedly been seen driving in tandem with the victims’ car roughly 25 minutes before the 911 call about the fire. Surveillance footage later showed the Saturn leaving the scene approximately 18 minutes after the emergency call.

Authorities said the vehicle was spotted later that day in River Rouge but initially managed to evade Detroit police. A Michigan State Police trooper eventually located the Saturn traveling southbound on I-75, prompting a high-speed chase.

The criminal complaint describes the dangerous pursuit: the driver — allegedly Redding — ran red lights, sped through exit ramps, drove on the shoulder, and nearly caused a collision before crashing into a median and fleeing on foot. He was captured a short distance away.

During a search of the Saturn, investigators recovered a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver hidden in a brown bag on the passenger floor. Documents with Redding’s name were also found in the vehicle.

Redding, who has a prior conviction for carjacking, armed robbery, and felony firearm possession, was paroled in July 2024 after serving more than a decade in prison. According to the criminal complaint, during his post-arrest interview, Redding claimed he ran because he was on parole and initially denied knowing about the firearm.

However, he later changed his story, allegedly telling detectives that he had seen and touched the gun, attempting to push it under the seat — admitting that his DNA would likely be on the weapon.

Federal investigators, including agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), continue building their case. At the same time, the Detroit Police Department and Michigan State Police pursue leads in the triple homicide.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
