A Colorado couple is facing trial in one of the state’s most disturbing child homicide cases — the murders of two young siblings whose remains were found more than five years after they vanished. Prosecutors allege that 37-year-old Corena Rose Minjarez and 36-year-old Jesus Dominguez killed Dominguez’s biological children, 5-year-old Jesus Jr and 3-year-old Yesenia, in 2018, then hid their bodies in concrete and a suitcase to conceal the crime.

The children were last seen alive in 2018, but their disappearance was never reported to police. On January 22, 2024, Pueblo police discovered Yesenia’s remains inside a metal container filled with concrete in a storage unit. A week later, they found Jesus Jr’s remains inside a suitcase hidden in the trunk of a car registered to Minjarez. Both locations were tied directly to her, according to investigators.

In court, Dominguez’s attorney claimed Minjarez was motivated by jealousy toward the children’s biological mother, accusing her of believing Dominguez was cheating. Family members told police Minjarez resented the children and treated them harshly. One relative recalled her locking the 3-year-old in a room until she finished eating a carrot. Another said she remarked that “life would be so much easier” without children.

Detectives testified that Minjarez confessed to friends on two separate occasions in six months, admitting both children had died in 2018. She allegedly told one friend that during a night of drug use, they later found Yesenia “unconscious behind the back seat.” Six months later, she told another person that Jesus Jr had died “the same way,” suggesting the children may have been trapped and asphyxiated.

Autopsy results determined the manner of death for both children was “homicidal violence,” but the cause could not be pinpointed due to the level of decomposition. Testimony also revealed allegations of both Minjarez and Dominguez locking the children up for extended periods, and Dominguez once slapping his son.

Minjarez’s defense argued there was no evidence she held a “position of trust” over the children, as she was not their legal guardian. Prosecutors countered that both she and Dominguez were solely responsible for the children’s welfare and had exclusive access to the car and storage unit where their bodies were found.

At a preliminary hearing on October 18, a judge ruled there was enough probable cause to send both defendants to trial. Minjarez and Dominguez are charged with multiple counts, including murder and abuse of a corpse. Their arraignment is scheduled for November 22.
