Capitol Heights, Maryland – Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend and Hiding Her Body in “Makeshift Tomb”

A heartbreaking case has shaken the Capitol Heights community after police discovered the body of 29-year-old Alexis Schuler, hidden in what authorities described as a “makeshift tomb” inside her boyfriend’s home. Devontae Gray, 30, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the discovery of Schuler’s remains.

A Missing Person Investigation Turns Into a Murder Case

Alexis Schuler, a Washington, D.C., resident and mother’s beloved daughter, was last seen on January 10, 2025. She had left her Southeast D.C. home that evening with her boyfriend, Devontae Gray, in his blue pickup truck. When her mother, Tiwana Schuler, didn’t hear from Alexis for several days, she reported her missing to the Metropolitan Police Department on January 14.

As the investigation unfolded, the Prince George’s County Police Department joined the search. Their efforts led them to Gray’s home in Capitol Heights, where disturbing evidence of foul play began to emerge.

The Chilling Discovery in a Capitol Heights Home

On January 19, 2025, police executed a search warrant at Gray’s residence. Inside the duplex at 716 Larchmont Avenue, investigators noticed several suspicious items, including fresh drywall, cleaning agents such as acetone and lemon ammonia, and construction materials scattered throughout the home.

Authorities also detected a strong, unusual smell upon entering the house. Although officers initially attributed the odor to the home’s unkempt condition during a welfare check on January 14, further inspection during the January 19 search revealed something far more sinister.

Behind freshly installed drywall under the stairs, investigators uncovered what appeared to be a “makeshift tomb.” Upon opening a large bin concealed within, they discovered a human foot—later confirmed to belong to Alexis Schuler.

The Evidence Against Devontae Gray

Court documents outline how Gray allegedly went to great lengths to hide Schuler’s body. Surveillance footage captured him on January 12 and 13 wearing a full-body construction suit with gloves, repeatedly entering and exiting his home with materials such as cement, sheetrock, cinder blocks, and large black storage containers.

A semi-automatic handgun was also recovered during the search, and police believe Gray shot Schuler following a domestic dispute. After his arrest, Gray confessed to the murder.

A Devastating Loss

Schuler’s family and community are left devastated by the senseless loss of a bright and loved individual. Her mother, Tiwana, described Alexis as a kindhearted and loving person who was always there for her family. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death have left loved ones grappling with both grief and unanswered questions.

Prince George’s County Police Chief commended the efforts of all involved in the investigation but acknowledged the profound pain felt by Alexis’ family:

“Our hearts are with the family of Alexis Schuler. This case reminds us of the importance of coming together to seek justice for victims of senseless violence.”

The Charges and Legal Proceedings

Devontae Gray has been charged with first-degree murder and related offenses. He remains in the custody of the Department of Corrections as he awaits trial. If convicted, Gray faces life in prison.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is continuing to investigate all aspects of the case, ensuring that no detail is overlooked as they pursue justice for Alexis.
